Using a RIBEYE knockout mouse, it is demonstrated that RIBEYE is a structural component of the active zone at photoreceptor ribbon synapses.\n\nA hallmark of the active zone of these synapses is a electron dense ribbon structure that is connected to the plasma membrane. It was previously shown that the ribbon contains ribeye (Schmitz et.al.). Maxeiner et al shows that genetic removal of ribeye ablates the synaptic ribbon from photoreceptor synapses. This demonstrates that ribeye is an structural component of the active zone at this synapse..
